There are so many benefits to Artificial Intelligence (AI) but it can also be used to commit fraud and identity theft.
What is AI Fraud?
AI fraud, also known as generative AI fraud, refers to scams and fraudulent activities that leverage artificial intelligence to create fake content to deceive individuals and organizations. This includes using AI to impersonate others, generate convincing fake documents, or create sophisticated phishing attacks.
Examples of AI Fraud:
AI Generated Text. Criminals use AI-generated text to appear believable to a reader with financial fraud schemes such as romance, investment, and other confidence schemes or to overcome common indicators of fraud schemes.
AI Generated Images. AI-generated images are used to create believable social media profile photos, identification documents, and other images in support of fraud schemes.
AI Generated Audio. Criminals can use AI-generated audio, also known as Voice Cloning, to impersonate well-known, public figures or personal relationships to elicit payments.
AI Generated Video. Criminals use AI-generated videos to create believable depictions of public figures to support their fraud schemes.
AI Powered Phishing. AI can be used to create highly targeted phishing emails that appear legitimate and more difficult to detect.
AI Generated Chatbots. Scammers are using AI-powered chatbots to impersonate individuals and organizations. These chatbots can potentially steal sensitive information or trick people into making fraudulent payments.
Ways to protect yourself from AI Fraud:
Be cautious of unsolicited communications.
Look for Red Flags such as urgency, pressure to act quickly, requests for personal information and demands for payment in unusual forms.
Always verify information. Before acting on any communication, take the time to verify the source and the information it contains.
Report suspicious activity. If you believe you have been targeted by an AI fraud scheme, report it to the appropriate authorities. Reports can be filed with the Federal Trade Commission.
